[ Character Portrayal. ]

Think about the characters you see on tv and in the movies. Is there any one character, or combination of characters, that you feel you strongly relate to? Do you feel like they are portraying you and your life right there on the screen? Tell us about them and why you relate to them so well.

Ask most people which is their favourite movie, and you'll get a bit of insight on who they are and/or who they'd rather be.

A former-friend-of-mine's favourite movie is Pretty Woman, and after watching it, I saw an glimpses of Julia Roberts in her. Another friend's favourite movie was Dirty Dancing and I saw reflections of a younger sibling with sexual yearnings, wishing for some stud to show her her womanhood.

With some movies or tv shows, I either see parts of me in the lead character (sometimes side-kick) or the person I wish I were. Auntie Mame is one of my favourite movies just because Rosalyn Russell's portrayal is so colorful and witty. Most people seem to think I'm larger than life and funny, a caricature, like Auntie Mame is, although I wish I were more extroverted.

One of my other favourite movies is The Wizard of Oz because the role of Dorothy was someone I clicked with: Someone wishing to be elsewhere, some place not so dreary, then ending up there and going on an adventure to get back to the dreary place she came from.

Sometimes I relate to the Scarecrow because I feel so stupid yet have moments of brilliance, sometimes it's the Tin-man because I feel numbed from my emotions when really I'm denying my vulnerability, and other times I feel like the Cowardly Lion who feels so powerless yet has moments of bravery: they're all in search of qualities they've already got yet still feel empty.

Another film I love, especially its character is Cleopatra Jones. As a little girl, I'd never seen any other heroic black woman kicking ass and being so fearless. I was impress and haunted by Tamara Dobson's portrayal of such a little know type of black woman I could possibly aspire to be. I have the first one, plus Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold on VHS. Who doesn't love seeing a heroic version of themselves projected on the screen?

It's funny how these stories are written up from the writer's imagination, yet sometimes they may be referencing someone's character they know of in real life. I saw Inside the Actor's Studio yesterday, and one of the writers said he based the story of Will & Grace on his relationship with his "girlfriend" before he came out of the closet. There's tons of people out there who're gay male/straight female coupled that would think it's about them. I don't fit in that catagory, yet I have a very good gay friend in Vancouver that use to invite me to his Work Christmas Parties on a yearly basis, with the knowledge that everyone knew he was gay. He's my gay boyfriend and I'm his lesbian girlfriend.
